Supervisors and students should note that if you are registered for the MRes VEIV or EngD VEIV programmes, the guidance below supersedes any departmental requirements (e.g. PhD regulations). These are because the VEIV are distinct programmes. Your department may impose extra conditions. If there are any problems please contact the Centre Director.

All PhD students associated with the UCL Centre VEIV, should follow their department's standard PhD programme, but please let the UCL Centre VEIV administration know about your progress.

    This page provides the forms and mark sheets for MRes VEIV and three and four year EngD VEIV programmes. EngD students and their supervisors should make sure that they use the correct set of forms below.

    All pre-2009 students were doing what is now known as the Four Year Modular EngD and on Portico will show as being registered on the programme DDNCOMSVEI01.

    Since 2009 most students register for the MRes VEIV (TMRCOMSVEI01) or other MRes in the first year, and then register for the Three Year EngD (DDNCOMSVEI09).

    We still allow students to register for the Four Year Modular EngD.

MRes & EngD Group Project

The group project is an optional module on the MRes VEIV and Four Year Modular EngD VEIV. It is strongly recommended for all students, but if for logistical reasons the timing of the group project is problematic, one of the individual research modules may be substituted. 


The overall aim of the group project is for you to implement a working virtual environment system that satisfies the needs of a target user group. You will need to review the state of the art, available technologies and your own competencies, plan a development phase and then demonstrate and evaluate the system. The project scope and definition is left to the students beyond some suggestions guided by current research questions in CS and Bartlett.

MRes Thesis

Your MRes VEIV thesis is due at the end of month 11 of the programme, no matter the start date; for those starting in October, this means end August/early September of the following year.

Three Year EngD Report and Submission Forms

The Three Year EngD VEIV programme includes a system of yearly milestones (if you are on the four year modular programme see this page). The milestones are at intervals of 12 months, 24 months and completion. Importantly, reports must be sumbitted to supervisors for marking, and the mark passed to the EngD Centre Manager, before these milestones are due. For this reason, reports should be submitted at months 11 and 23. 


MileStone 1: 12 Months

  • Month 11: submit First Year Report (see below)
  • Month 12: complete viva

MileStone 2: 24 Months

  • Month 23: submit Secone Year Report  (see below)
  • Month 24: complete viva

MileStone 3: Completion (typically 36 months)

  • Defend final EngD thesis

MRes Individual Research Modules

MRes VEIV Individual Research Modules

During the MRes year or during the modular EngD, students may undertake one research-led module instead of a taught element (it may not replace the professional and skills training modules). These modules introduce the student to methods of research with graphics and visualisation systems via small research projects or literature reviews. These are intended to develop initial research questions, which may be developed further in the MRes individual research project. The same work may not be submitted for marking in both the individual research module and the main MRes thesis, but the latter can utilise the earlier work if appropriately annotated.

There are no specific lecture, seminar and studio components for these modules, but the student may audit related modules, to gaub specific background knowledge and a forum for discussion with other students. 

The work is assessed as a short research project. There are two different modules, Exploring Critical Issues in VEIV (COMPGR03, worth 15 credits)and Evaluating Topics in VEIV (COMPGR04 worth 30 credits). Students and supervisors can gauge the extent and depth of the work required by considering that the main MRes thesis is worth 30 credits.
