Dr Sean Hanna

Sean Hanna is Lecturer in Space and Adaptive Architectures at the UCL Bartlett School of Graduate Studies. He is course director of the MSc AAC and MRes AAC. Sean is also co-investigator on the ENFOLDing project, which investigates global dynamics and complex systems.

Sean also completed his EngD with the VEIV Centre.

His current research is in optimisation and machine learning for structural design and digital manufacturing. In addition his research aims to develop computational methods for dealing with complex systems in architecture. The main body of his recent work has focused specifically on two example problems: structural space frames and the layout of spaces for given social networks. Previous publications address the fields of artificial intelligence, collaborative creativity, robotics and the optimisation of structures and materials.

Sean Hanna does not only concern himself with the engineering solutions presented to him by his areas of investigation. He has also developed theories of the emergent nature of social creativity with respect to it's coupling with the surrounding social architecture. He also addresses what must be demanded of our environments if we wish to consider them truly intelligent.

In a talk delivered at Canada's innovative 'Subtle Techologies Festival'  Sean develops the idea of responsive materials that could be inherently intelligent and respond to external forces in the environment, like the cells living in an organism. You can watch the entirety of that talk here (embed if possible). For more you can watch Sean deliver a keynote lecture on Adaptive Architecture (embed if possible)
