First Year
Milestone 1: Submit First Year EngD Report
DEADLINE: End of Month 11
- First Year EngD Reports should be approximately 20-30 pages.
- You should state the goal of the proposed EngD, motivate the problem and list the potential contributions.
- You should give a critical literature review that informs the proposal, highlighting the key state of the art in the area of the proposal.
- You could include summaries of exploratory work done in the first year, these should inform the proposed contribution.
- You should give an initial plan of work to be undertaken in the second year of the EngD
- Make sure the report puts the assessors in a good position to answer the questions contained in the Feedback Form (link below).
- This report should be comparable to an MRes thesis, but it is not done for credit.
- The report must be submitted to your primary supervisor for marking ahead of the Oral Examination. Two markers will assess the report.
Milestone 2: Complete Oral Examination (viva) and submit Feedback Form
DEADLINE: End of Month 12
- There will be an Oral Examination with your two supervisors and an assessor. The assessor is usually an academic member of staff who is not associated with your research.
- It is also desirable that your industrial supervisor attends the Oral Examination.
- You will make a short presentation of 10-15 minutes explaining your research.
- The purpose of the Oral examination is for you to defend your research and to check that there is a viable plan of work leading to doctoral quality research.

- Make sure the report puts the assessors in a good position to answer the questions contained in the Feedback Form (link below).
- The report is roughly comparable to a first year PhD report, but given that an EngD student on this programme will have completed two years of research, we would expect a better formed idea of the work and substantive research to have already been undertaken.
