First Year
Milestone 1: Submit First Year EngD Report
DEADLINE: End of Month 11
- First Year EngD Reports should be approximately 40-50 pages.
- You should give a detailed report of work completed, and show how the thesis hypothesis will be validated within the remaining time.
- Make sure the report puts the assessors in a good position to answer the questions contained in the Feedback Form (link below).
- The report is roughly comparable to a first year PhD report, but given that a EngD student on this programme will have recently completed an MRes, we would expect a better formed idea of the work and substantive research to have already been undertaken.
- The report must be submitted to your primary supervisor for marking ahead of the Oral Examination.
Milestone 2: Complete Oral Examination (viva) and submit Feedback Form
DEADLINE: End of Month 12
- There will be an Oral Examination with your two supervisors and an assessor. The assessor is usually an academic member of staff who is not associated with your research.
- It is also desirable that your industrial supervisor attends the Oral Examination.
- You will make a short presentation of 10-15 minutes explaining your research.
- The purpose of the Oral examination is for you to defend your research and to check that there is a viable plan of work leading to doctoral quality research.
- First Year Report & Oral Examination Feedback Form21/11/2016 This form is completed by the assessor after your Oral Examination.
Second Year
Milestone 3: Submit Second Year EngD Report
DEADLINE: End of Month 23
- Your second year report should be in the form of a partial draft thesis.
- Second year reports vary in length dramatically, but 50-90 pages is typical.
- Make sure the report puts the assessors in a good position to answer the questions contained in the feedback form (see link below)
- The report must be submitted to your primary supervisor for marking ahead of the Oral Examination.
Milestone 4: Complete Oral Examination (viva) and submit Feedback Form
DEADLINE: End of Month 24
- There will be a Oral Examination with your two supervisors and an assessor. The assessor is usually an academic member of staff that is not associated with your research.
- It is desirable that your industrial supervisor be there.
- You will make a short presentation of 10-15 minutes explaining your research.
- The purpose of the viva is for the candidate to demonstrate that they have completed the main body of research work in their doctorate and that they have a good plan to finish in the remaining 12 months.
- Second Year Report & Oral Examination Feedback Form21/11/2016 This form is completed by the assessor after your Oral Examination.
Third Year
Milestone 5: Completion
DEADLINE: End of Month 36
- Submit and defend your final EngD Thesis
- For further information please see the Useful Information tab
- If the thesis is not ready, your supervisor is required to submit a short report to the EngD exam board to outline the progress that has been made and when submission is likely. Such reports will be due on a yearly basis until the thesis is submitted, or the student de-registers.
